Paramhansa Yogananda, an Indian monk and self realized Yogi, wrote his autobiography in the early 20th century in an effort to bring the ancient teachings of Kriya Yoga to the west. The book’s premise, which is supposedly based on true events, is the realization of one’s own true self is not only possible, but is every human being’s ultimate destiny. Perhaps the most amazing aspect of his autobiography is the stories he relates of Indian Yogi/Saints he met during his life in India. There is a story about a Yogi who can simultaneously be in two places at once and others of levitation, miraculous healings and psychic power. One story relates Yogananda’s experience meeting a British stigmatatist (one who routinely endures and re-enacts the passion of the Christ) who never ate because she claimed to survive solely upon “the Light of God.
