HANGING Rock, the ancient volcanic formation in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges immortalised by the movie Picnic at Hanging Rock, is said by Aborigines who know it to have a sense of “unfinished business”. According to Guido, Hanging Rock – the stand-out icon attraction in a region promoted as Daylesford and the Macedon Ranges – is only a 35-minute drive northwest from Tullamarine Airport and receives about 80,000 visitors a year. If you leave the spas in the Daylesford/Hepburn Springs area for a separate visit, you can cover the main attractions around Macedon, Mt Macedon, Woodend and Kyneton in a weekend, though you should budget for an extra day if you want to explore the Sunbury wine-growing region. Located 12km from Woodend and close to Hanging Rock Reserve on the Jim Jim – another ancient volcanic eminence – this is Australia’s coldest vineyard and the producer of superb sparkling, shiraz, sauvignon blanc, pinot gris, riesling and other award-winning wines. read more
