But it turns out that the resident performers, a Takarazuka-style all-female acting troupe, lead double lives as the Imperial Fighting Troupe, psychic warriors who protect Tokyo from marauding demons and steam-powered robots. It concerns Iris, the youngest but most psychically powerful member of the Imperial Fighting troupe, who has not yet been involved in any battles and is usually shown dressed in ruffles and bows and hugging a teddy bear. In the series’ fantasy version of Taisho era Tokyo, as in reality, silent movies were screened with live narrators explaining the action and supplying the dialogue. There is a little nudity drawn so none of the essentials are revealed but this is usually employed for comical effect, as when the troupe are changed out of civilian clothes and into fighting uniforms by a clawed machine that snatches their garments away and then replaces them in a blink. read more
